Why is my dog vomiting and having diarrhea? - What Is Parvo

My Dog is Vomiting & Have Diarrhea Please Help!

There are many reasons why a dog may be having GI upsets, however today's topic is the Canine Parovirus.

Canine Parvovirus - Otherwise known as Parvo is a virus that affects dogs (and in rare strains cats).  The virus attacks the villi in the small intestines. Villi run along the inside of a mammal's small intestine and absorb nutrients.

The virus is found in the environment and can live dormant for years. The only product that kills Parvo is bleach

It mainly affects puppies who are unvaccinated from the disease.
 - Which is why you should always vaccinate your dogs!!!

Symptoms Include: Lethargy, depression, dehydration, vomiting, bloody/mucus-y diarrhea, and lack of appetite.

There is no definite 'cure' for Parvo yet. The symptoms are treated and antibiotics are given to avoid bacterial infections.

From my own personal experience I saw multiple dogs that came into the veterinary office with Parvo and all that were treated survived. I'm not promising they will survive, but the chances are good if caught early and the proper treatment is given.

The treatment for Parvo is expensive, more expensive than vaccinations. If you are not vaccinating your dog because you do not have the money, please don't get a dog. Wait until you can afford it.

If you think your dog has the Canine Parvovirus call your veterinarian immediately!

PLEASE DO NOT GO INTO THE OFFICE. HAVE THEM TEST YOUR DOG IN THE CAR TO AVOID CONTAMINATING THEIR OFFICE.
(You may talk to a receptionist who is unexperienced with Parvo when scheduling the appointment and they may not tell you to not go inside. DO NOT GO INSIDE THE OFFICE PLEASE).
